Year 2
In Year 2, we have two classes; 2 Murray and 2 Bird who learn through interesting and engaging topics.
All children learn through a mix of independent and group activities which are stimulating; building on their prior knowledge.
Welcome to 2 Bird
Welcome to 2 Bird! We are named after Isabella Bird, a female British explorer who loved to travel. She rode horses, boats, and camels, and saw amazing places that most women in her time never visited!. Our Teacher is Mrs Murphy and our learning support assistant is Miss Ryatt; they help us build our confidence and independence so that we can all achieve our potential.

We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning about the Great Fire of London and how Florence Nightingale changed medicine for everyone. We will be going on an exciting trip to the Thackray museum to investigate how Florence Nightingale changed the way modern hospitals are run.
So far, we have enjoyed being Geographers as part of our topic Big World, Little Me. We completed field work to find out whether there are more human or physical features in our local area of Beeston. We then used our navigational skills to locate our mystery destination on our map- the local library! We enjoyed reading a range of stories and texts at the library and choosing a selection of books to take back to school with us.

Welcome to 2 Murray
The teachers in our class are Miss Balmforth and Mrs Craine and our Learning Support Assistant is Mrs Mahmood. Our class is named after Matthew Murray who built steam engines; he built the steam engine 'Salamanca' for Middleton Railway in Leeds. We engage your children within their learning, nurture them to grow as life-long learners and prepare them for their bright, ambitious future. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and developing our 'Growth Mindset'. Please take a look at our Curriculum Overview each half term to find out what topics we are learning about. We have a Wonderdome experience in the spring term and we will be visiting Thackray Museum of Medicine in the summer term to link in with our history topic of 'How did Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole change the nursing profession?
At the end of Autumn 1, as part of Black History Month, we learnt about who Rosa Parks was and why she is still remembered today. We learnt and added actions to the poem 'Go to the Back Rosa Parks'. We performed this in class and our written work on Rosa Parks and the poem were displayed in our school's Black History Hero Gallery - we got the opportunity to walk around and find out about the other Black History Month Heroes studied across school. It was a brilliant and memorable experience!
