Art

Intent
Through our Curriculum Drivers and Golden Threads, Art at New Bewerley Community School consists of a robust and progressive delivery of art and all its forms. Here at New Bewerley we aim to provide an art curriculum which enables each child to reach their full potential learning in art, through investigating and making, through research and the development of skills and through their evaluation of their own art and that made by others.
Art enables children to be creative, develop a sense of enjoyment and fulfilment in learning. It fosters a child’s imagination, development of expressive skills and allows them to create their own works of art and design. Allowing the children to express their thoughts and emotions through art, enables them to develop good personal, social and emotional development. Art also gives children the opportunities to have first-hand experiences, looking at the work from other artists and allows them to reflect upon how they have contributed to culture and history.
Implementation
EYFS:
In the Early Years, daily opportunities are provided for children to develop essential skills in Expressive Arts and Design - creating with materials where children are taught to safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function and share their creations, explaining the process they have used. Children are provided with a variety of mark making materials, along with materials for collage, printing and sculpting. They are also encouraged to make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories. Cross-curricular opportunities allow children’s early creative skills to be assessed in Literacy and Physical development alongside specific EAD opportunities.
Year 1 – 6:
At New Bewerley Community School, the implementation of art is split into three half terms. Art skill areas will be spread over the half terms to ensure full coverage of the skills necessary in each year group. Each unit of art will have cross curricular links where possible, which seek to enrich the curriculum.
As an artist, children will have the opportunity to be immersed in a curriculum which offers the progression of skills from EYFS to Year 6. The curriculum and planning will be an amalgamation of lessons planned by teachers and the Art Subject leader. It expected that by Year 6, children will have learned a comprehensive set of skills, they will have exposed to a rich and varied vocabulary in art and will have the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of different media used in art.
Each year group, will use their sketch books throughout the year. It is a school expectation that the sketch books will be used in every half term where Art is taught. Sketchbooks will show experimentation, showcase other Artists’ work, and will highlight a progression of skills across the year.

Impact
Children at New Bewerley Community School, after the implementation of this curriculum, will: have a good knowledge of the creative development process; be critical thinkers who can evaluate their own ideas and those of others in a useful and supportive manner; have developed key skills in the making of a range of artworks in all key skills areas- drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textile and photography. In addition, they will have a good knowledge of a variety of artists from various social, economic and ethnic backgrounds, in addition to artists past and present. Children will develop independence throughout our Art curriculum and key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation.
Teachers use on-going formative observations and assessments as well as summative end of unit assessments to evaluate who has met or not met the intended outcomes of each lesson or the unit of work as a whole. Children are given adequate time, resources and support (as needed) for each stage of the creative process and additional support can be provided by the class teacher, a teaching assistant or by their peers. By assessing each stage and providing the support needed, all children can make progress and achieve within our Art curriculum.
The Art Subject Leader will continually monitor the impact teaching is having on the children’s learning through looking at examples of pupil’s work, assessment analysis and pupil interviews to ensure the effectiveness of the curriculum in place. The subject leader will also continue to monitor planning to ensure all skills intended for each year group have been introduced.
Assessment:
Art assessment is a continuous process throughout each set of skills, helping teachers to plan lessons and tailor activities to meet students' needs. Prior learning is revisited at the beginning of each lesson through memory recall questions and the use of knowledge organisers created for each skill. Summative assessments are carried out at the end of each topic and teachers assess the children to ensure they gave a secure understanding of each topic's MUST KNOW Knowledge.
