Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is the final stage of primary school and an exciting year filled with opportunities for children to develop independence, confidence and resilience as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. We encourage our pupils to aim high, embrace challenges and take pride in their achievements.
6 France
Our class is named after Arthur France MBE, a respected community leader in Leeds and founder of the Leeds West Indian Carnival, the oldest authentic Caribbean carnival in Europe. His commitment to community, culture and inclusion inspires us to celebrate diversity and make positive contributions to the world around us.
We spent our first week in school learning about the carnival, listening to music and finding out all about how he became so famous! We created some great carnival costume designs and great timeline work too.

Our teacher this year is Mrs Alexiou-Holt with Miss Milligan covering the class on a Thursday, we are also supported by a dedicated team including Miss Teale, Miss Hughes and Mrs Bousfield.
Together, we create a supportive and ambitious learning environment where children are encouraged to become independent learners, develop resilience and strive to achieve their full potential. We nurture our pupils to become lifelong learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
Through our Growth Mindset approach, we encourage children to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and recognise that effort and determination lead to success.
6 Cohen
Our class is named after Leonora Cohen OBE (1873-1978), one of Leeds' most remarkable women. Born in Hunslet, she became a leading campaigner for women's rights and worked alongside the suffragette movement, including serving as a bodyguard to Emmeline Pankhurst. She became known as the "Tower Suffragette" following a famous protest at the Tower of London.
After helping to secure voting rights for women, Leonora continued to serve her community and was awarded an OBE for her services to Leeds. She lived to the age of 105 and spent her life championing equality and opportunity for others.
This year, we were proud to welcome a mural of Leonora Cohen, painted by local artist Karl Canning, to New Bewerley Community School. Previously displayed in the local community, the artwork has found a new home on our MUGA fencing, where it can be enjoyed by pupils, families and visitors alike. Leonora's courage, determination and belief that everyone deserves a voice continue to inspire us today.

Our teacher is Mr Duxbury and we are supported by a dedicated team including Miss Lingard, Miss Lockwood, Miss Hughes, Mrs Blackburn and Mrs Bousfield.
In 6 Cohen, we encourage children to become confident, responsible and ambitious learners who are ready for the challenges of secondary school. We support children to develop independence, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility for their learning and their community. Through our Growth Mindset approach, we encourage children to persevere, challenge themselves and recognise that success comes through effort, determination and a positive attitude.
