 Intent

At New Bewerley, the intent of our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is to provide all pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifelong participation in physical activity and to understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive, and carefully sequenced to meet the needs of all learners, underpinned by our key curriculum drivers: Collaborate, Contribute, Commit, Create, and Celebrate.

Through high-quality PE lessons and wider opportunities, we aim to:

  • Collaborate – Develop teamwork, communication, and leadership by working positively with others in a variety of physical activities and games. Pupils learn to respect different roles within a team and value the contributions of others.
  • Contribute – Encourage every child to participate fully and to take responsibility for their own physical development and that of others, whether by helping peers, leading warm-ups, or supporting school sports events.
  • Commit – Foster resilience, determination, and a growth mindset. Pupils are taught to set personal goals, overcome challenges, and persevere in learning new skills, regardless of initial ability or confidence.
  • Create – Promote creativity and individual expression through activities such as dance, gymnastics, and problem-solving in outdoor adventurous challenges. Pupils are given the space to explore, invent, and refine their own ideas within physical contexts.
  • Celebrate – Recognise effort, progress, and success in PE. Whether through personal achievements, sports day victories, or team competitions, we celebrate all forms of progress and encourage pupils to value physical activity as a source of joy and pride.

Our PE curriculum (PE Planning scheme) enables pupils to develop physical literacy, competence, and confidence across a broad range of activities. We ensure progression in fundamental movement skills, sport-specific techniques, and understanding of rules and tactics from EYFS through to Year 6. Pupils also learn about health, fitness, and the impact of exercise on the body and mind, developing habits that will benefit them throughout life.

 PE Long Term Plan

Ultimately, our intent is to ensure that by the end of primary school, all pupils leave New Bewerley with positive attitudes towards PE, equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in secondary school and motivated to lead healthy, active lives beyond the classroom

Implementation

In Early Years, the key focus is on

  • Development of Motor Competence and Fundamental Movement Skills.
  • Being safe and kind when touching equipment and classmates.

KS1

The focus is to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as developing balance, agility, and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

They will begin to participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. They will also focus on making safe decisions in contact with equipment and classmates.

LKS2

  • Continued progress of Motor Competence, by running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
  • Healthy Participation; making safe decisions and understanding the relationships between physical activity and its effect on the body.

UKS2

  • Continued progress of Motor Competence.
  • Understanding and applying Rules, Strategies and Tactics.
  • Healthy Participation; making safe long-term decisions and understanding the relationships between physical activity and its effect on the body.

Assessment:

We use a combination of formative and summative assessment to monitor progress and inform teaching.

Formative assessment takes place during every lesson through observation, questioning, and immediate verbal feedback. Teachers assess how pupils perform, apply skills, and collaborate, adapting lessons to meet individual needs.

Summative assessment occurs at the end of each unit. Teachers use curriculum-linked criteria to judge pupils’ skill development, tactical understanding, and knowledge of health and fitness.

Implementation

At our school, our PE curriculum is designed to embody our core values: Every Child, Everyday... Engaged in Learning, Prepared for Their Future, Nurtured for Growth.

By fostering a love of movement and physical activity, we ensure that every child is actively engaged in learning—developing physical skills, confidence, and a positive attitude towards health and fitness. Through inclusive and high-quality PE provision, all pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves and experience the joy of physical success, regardless of their starting point.

Our curriculum is enriched by taster sessions with external coaches and local sports clubs, giving pupils the opportunity to explore new sports, discover hidden talents, and be inspired by positive role models. These experiences not only broaden participation but also open pathways for continued involvement in sport outside of school.

We also value healthy competition as a tool for personal and social development. Pupils take part in intra- and inter-school sports events, where they develop teamwork, resilience, and pride in representing their school. These opportunities help pupils to prepare for their future by promoting sportsmanship, leadership, and effective collaboration.

PE at our school also nurtures growth—emotionally, socially, and physically. We celebrate individual improvement, determination, and teamwork, helping pupils build resilience, manage emotions, and feel proud of their progress.

By building a community where everyone collaborates, contributes, commits, creates, and celebrates, our PE curriculum not only strengthens pupils' physical wellbeing but also fosters a deep sense of belonging, motivation, and pride. It empowers them to lead active, healthy lives and to see physical activity as a powerful tool for lifelong wellbeing and personal growth
