Climate Change & Sustainability
Intent
At New Bewerley Community School, our vision is for every child to understand, care for, and take responsibility for the world around them. We want our pupils to grow into thoughtful, informed young people who recognise how their actions can shape a better future. Our curriculum is designed to help children develop a deep understanding of their environment and the positive role they can play in looking after it.
Our aim is simple:
Every child, every day
Engaged in learning,
Prepared for their future,
Nurtured for growth.
Climate Change Progression in Knowledge
Our curriculum is designed to help pupils see how their actions can make a positive difference in their community and the wider world.
As children move through school, they learn about the environment step by step. In the younger years, they explore weather, seasons, and hot and cold places. As they get older, they learn about continents, oceans, climate zones, rivers, the water cycle, biomes, and the Amazon Rainforest. They begin to understand how human actions, such as deforestation or pollution, affect our planet. This builds naturally into learning about climate change.
By Year 6, pupils can talk confidently about carbon footprints, global trade, and how different countries are affected by climate change. They also learn about solutions — like saving energy, reducing waste, protecting forests, and choosing Fairtrade products — so they feel empowered to take action.
Environmental understanding at New Bewerley is part of who we are. We want every child to leave us knowing how to care for the planet and how their choices can help create a better future.

Sustainability Action Plan
Here at New Bewerley Community School, we are already taking real action on sustainability through our solar panel system, installed in February 2025. As a school, we now has 135 panels producing clean, renewable energy, with a forecast of 1.13 GWh of electricity generated over their lifetime, saving an estimated 217 tonnes of CO₂.
In just the last 28 days, the system generated 7 MWh, preventing 2 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, showing pupils and the community how renewable energy can make a meaningful difference.
In May 2025, we won the Carbon Reduction Action Award from the Leeds Global Learning Awards for the work done to reduce our Carbon Footprint.

Take a look at our Climate Action Plan to further explain how we further plan reduce energy use, waste, and emissions across the school.
